How old do I have to be in order to do a tattoo apprenticeship in the UK?

I live very near Brighton, and I’d love to do a tattoo apprenticeship. Only thing is, how old would I have to be? I’m 15 now. I’m very interested in art, especially tattoo designs so I’d love to get a head start at a possible future career. Thanks guys :)

    Hi there,

Im glad you posted this question, because i think its a subject in the tattoo industry which doesnt get talked about too much.

Unfortunately, you will probably find most establishments will not take anyone under the age of 18, i remember when i was starting out, and i managed to slip into a studio when i was just approaching 18. Finding the right apprenticeship with the right teacher these days can be a nerve wracking process, as finding the right teacher, who can provide you with the teaching you need, combined with the rarity of apprenticeships, makes it incredibly hard to get into the industry.

However, if you do manage to find the right combination, you will find yourself in a very good position, because you will learn what you need to know, whilst enjoying yourself, and also working around the shop, getting a feel for day to day studio life.

Obviously, your teacher will require you to do odd jobs around the shop, these can range from book keeping, to maintaining a high level of hygeine in the shop, as well as liasing with customers, but work hard, and you will get where you want to go. I hope this has been of some use to you, as many of the things i have mentioned, are hurdles i have had to jump in order to get where i am today.

Countless hours of tracing and drawing are inevitable, but you will soon see the point when you reap the rewards!

Keep drawing, and practicing different styles of tattoos, then you will be equipped when your time comes!

Hope it all works out for you & good luck!

    Jake
